ABOUT THE ARTIST

Biography:

Kemp Aw (b.2000), is an interdisciplinary visual artist based in Singapore and has graduated with a Diploma in Fine Art at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), Singapore. Using a wide variety of painting techniques, he seeks to create unique aesthetic and subjects that intrigued him. His works has been exhibited at the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) 2018 Art Exhibition (ARTIST AND CITIZENSHIP) at the National Gallery Singapore and was also featured in a group exhibition (Savour the Arts-season 4) at The Connoisseur Concerto (TCC) Singapore. Kemp has also participated in various school exhibitions, including a collaboration with Singapore Tourism Board (STB), (Celebrating the World’s 50 best restaurants 2019) . He has also interned at Artlette Art Studio as an art teacher. Kemp has attained the Dean’s List award for the Academic Year 2019/2020 and 2018/2019. He was also awarded the CDC/CCC Art Bursary Award (Tier 1) for the Academic Year 2019/2020, 2018/2019, 2017/2018.

Focus

My current artistic practice delves into human connections, in particular relationships within family; community that revolves around culture, tradition and our day to day lives.

Sensibility being the emotional compass to my approach, I use painting primarily as an introspective method to evoke nostalgia and familiarity. The process of painting not only allows me to confront issues that I’m dealing with, but also provide a space to reflect and be vulnerable. As such, it enables me to produce works that I feel compelled to and are dear to my heart.  My art also dabbles into fragments of personal memories and space, thereby invoking memories of the past which provide glimpses of history and traces of my identity. Through these personal narrative of my artworks, I seek to create an ambience for my audience to empathise; to challenge ideas and have deep intimate conversations with one another. It is a space for everyone to look back at their own journey, to be reminded of the relationships we've forged and to value every moment in life.
