Home-Coming

Medium: Oil Painting on canvases, wood, table and stool.
Size: Dimension variable (Installation)

Commenting on the fragility of life, Home-coming examines the fear of losing loved ones, culture, moments, and ties. It aims to identify the vital relationships between individuals, particularly within family as the artist gathers his own personal histories and memories. Reconstructing a space explores the relationship of the occupant in relation to her built environment,  thus offering a deep introspection for the audience to reflect upon their own people and cultural upbringing. In this dining room that I have created, it speaks of communality which reveals my longing for deep intimate conversations. Using chicken rice and a family photograph as a literal representation of my Hainanese roots , I explore the relationship between the absence and the presence, thereby allowing me to rediscover the fleeting nature of traditions and heritage. Taking the essence of a communal place where thoughts, conversations, laughter are being exchanged, I seek to push the boundaries on the notion of biological family and my Hainanese identity. It is an attempt to understand our desires of wanting to belong, to find deep rooting and a quest to find solace.
As such, Home-Coming invites the audience as well to revisit their own stories and cultural identity. It is a shared space that reflects ideas of time and bodies of memories, to contemplate on what it means to dwell at Home.
